The origin of this city

There is hardly any archaeological data that points to the origin of this city. However, local legends and myths are of the opinion that this city was created by Shiva and Parvati. In fact, this was the first ground that was created, is what the legends tell you! Originally the city was called Kashi, which roughly translated into brightness, probably alluding to the fact that this was once a centre of learning and hence enlightenment.

Though excavations and findings cannot ascertain the date of origin of this city, it has been proved for sure that the Aryans had come and settled down over here. In fact, it became of the most important centres of the Aryan culture, and hence, it later flourished as an important centre for learning of the Hindu philosophy. Apart from being a centre of learning and excellence, this city also prided itself in the production of silk, muslin, ivory products, sculptures and even perfumes. There are indications that during 6 BC, Varanasi emerged as the capital of Kashi, which was then a kingdom. It was during this time that Buddhism and Jainism were in its formative years. It is interesting to note here that Buddha after attaining nirvana decided to travel to the outskirts of this centre of learning and preach his very first sermon! You can still visit this place today in Sarnath, which is roughly about 12 km away from the city of Varanasi.
