The History of Varanasi

Tradition of Staying in Varanasi

There are various reasons, which contribute towards making Varanasi one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Apart from the ghats and the excellent food that you get over here, it is the history of this place that attracts many travellers to this city, which is believed to be over 3000 years old!

Excavations and documents from various foreign travellers, who had visited this city all say that Varanasi was once a centre of learning and excellence. Hindu scriptures and various holy texts were once taught here. So people from different parts of the country used to come here and stay in this environment of spiritual learning. Hindus also believe that if one dies in Varanasi and his or her ashes are given to the holy waters of the Ganga, then they will be free from the cycle of rebirth. Hence, many people from around the country used to come and spend the last years of their life in Varanasi. This practise is still prevalent in some of the corners of the country. Since time immemorial, Varanasi has been open to welcoming those who have wanted to come here!

Thus, if you are looking for a hotel in Varanasi, then be assured that you will find plenty and be able to choose one according to your needs and specifications.

The origin of this city

There is hardly any archaeological data that points to the origin of this city. However, local legends and myths are of the opinion that this city was created by Shiva and Parvati. In fact, this was the first ground that was created, is what the legends tell you! Originally the city was called Kashi, which roughly translated into brightness, probably alluding to the fact that this was once a centre of learning and hence enlightenment.

A picture of the ancient city of Varanasi

Though excavations and findings cannot ascertain the date of origin of this city, it has been proved for sure that the Aryans had come and settled down over here. In fact, it became of the most important centres of the Aryan culture, and hence, it later flourished as an important centre for learning of the Hindu philosophy. Apart from being a centre of learning and excellence, this city also prided itself in the production of silk, muslin, ivory products, sculptures and even perfumes. There are indications that during 6 BC, Varanasi emerged as the capital of Kashi, which was then a kingdom. It was during this time that Buddhism and Jainism were in its formative years. It is interesting to note here that Buddha after attaining nirvana decided to travel to the outskirts of this centre of learning and preach his very first sermon! You can still visit this place today in Sarnath, which is roughly about 12 km away from the city of Varanasi. All you need to do is book a car or an auto from your resort Varanasi and make your way to this place.

Thus, as you see, Varanasi is as old as it gets! Its rich history, undoubtedly, makes it one of the most interesting tourist destinations in the world.
